Alachua County, FL (January 5, 2019) - Police have identified the seven victims of a horrific, fiery crash that took place in Alachua County on Thursday, January 3rd.
Five children from Louisiana on the way to Disney World were killed in the accident. They have been identified as 14-year-old Joel Cloud, 14-year-old Jeremiah Warren, 13-year-old Brieana Descant, 10-year-old Cara Descant, and 9-year-old Cierra Bordelan. Also killed in the crash were 59-year-old Steve Holland and 49-year-old Douglas Bolkema.
The crash took place around 3:40 pm near mile marker 394. Police say that a semi, driven by Steve Holland, was traveling northbound on I-75 when it collided with a Honda. The crash caused both cars to crash into a guardrail and enter the southbound lanes of I-75. The semi then struck a church van carrying the children and caused the van to flip over. The semi continued on and struck another semi causing both to erupt into flames.
The crash remains under investigation.
This crash is one of the most horrific traffic incidents that has ever been seen in our state. Although fatal accidents occur daily in Florida, it is unusual to see a tragedy on this scale. We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the families of the seven who were killed in this crash.
