Auburndale, FL (November 15, 2018) - Two pedestrians were killed in a tragic crash on Auburndale Road. The crash happened just after 8:00 pm on Monday, November 12th.
Auburndale Police were called to the scene near Marjorie Avenue. There police discovered that a 17 year old was operating a Toyota Camry in the southbound lanes. The Camry then struck two women who were attempted to cross the street before walking into the path of the vehicle. The victims, identified as 34 year old Judy Metellus-Pradel and 43 year old Rosamunda Martel, suffered critical injuries and both were later pronounced dead.
The driver remained on the scene following the crash. Police are still investigating, at this time, no charges have been filed in connection with the crash.
Each year over 10,000 pedestrian accidents are reported. Pedestrian crashes happen largely at night or early the morning and along poorly lit roadways, making the scene especially dangerous for drivers and pedestrians.
When at all possible, pedestrians should walk in areas with adequate lighting where they can be seen by passing motor vehicles. Pedestrians walking at night should wear light-colored reflective clothing. Drivers must also take care to avoid pedestrian crashes by traveling cautiously through areas where pedestrians are expected and by stopping at all stop signs and crosswalks. In this crash, it remains to be seen whether the driver will be held responsible for any negligence.
