Brevard County, FL (December 10, 2018) - A 54-year-old man from West Melbourne was struck and killed by a vehicle while attempting to cross US 1 on Saturday, December 8th.
Investigators say that James Newman was crossing the street in an eastbound direction around 7:05 pm when the accident took place. Newman was struck by the front of a passing vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. He was not in a crosswalk or other marked area when he was hit. There is no word on whether the driver remained on scene following the crash.
Police continue to investigate the crash and there is no word on whether any charges will be filed.
In 2017, Florida was ranked second in the nation for the greatest number of pedestrian deaths. About two pedestrians will die each day in traffic-related crashes across our state. These statistics underscore the fact that pedestrians are a very vulnerable group when it comes to traffic collisions. The risk of death or serious injury in any pedestrian-related incident is very high.
In this crash, we do not have enough details to determine whether the driver could have avoided the collision from occurring. A close examination of the scene, along with consideration of any witness statements will help officers determine whether the driver was negligent in the death of James Newman or whether the crash was simply an unavoidable tragedy.
