Cape Canaveral, FL (February 15, 2019) - A crash involving two vehicles claimed the life of a 66-year-old man in Cape Canaveral on Friday, February 15th.
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol were called to mile marker 53 along State Road 528 in reference to the collision. Officials say that a Dodge pickup truck was traveling in the eastbound lanes when, for unknown reasons, it crossed over the median and veered into the westbound lanes. While on the westbound side of the highway, the Dodge collided head-on with a Ford pickup truck. The driver of the Ford, 66-year-old Paul Tucker, was killed in the crash. The driver of the Dodge suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
Authorities have not identified the Dodge driver. Charges are pending in the crash. The westbound lanes of SR 528 were closed until about 2:00 pm while police remained on scene.
Fatal crashes occur about eight times each day in Florida. Distraction, impairment and drowsiness are frequent causes of serious and fatal crashes across our state. While we do not yet know what caused the Dodge to travel into the opposite lanes, police will investigate and determine why this negligent driving behavior took place. Our deepest condolences are with the family of Paul Tucker at this time as they deal with the tragic loss of their loved one.
