In St. Lucie on Monday, 69-year-old Charles Gables and his passenger 78-year-old Katherine Russ were driving on Kings Highway when, all of a sudden, the car left the road and traveled onto the grassy shoulder. It then collided with a utility polt. The 2015 Dodge Journey rolled over and caught fire around 2:30 p.m. on Indrio Road. It finally came to rest with its wheels facing west and was quickly consumed by fire.
Bystanders who were at the accident scene ran to the vehicle and pulled Gables and Russ from the burning wreckage before first responders came to the scene. A spokeswoman for the St. Lucie County Fire District said that there could have been a very different outcome if nobody had acted quickly to remove them from the vehicle.
Both Charles Gables and Katherine Russ were taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute with serious injuries.
