Charlotte County, FL (September 2, 2018) - Officers were called to the 3400 block of Peace River Drive on Saturday in Charlotte County in reference to a pedestrian accident. When police arrived on scene, they located a pedestrian in the roadway suffering from serious injuries. A further investigation revealed that the pedestrian was walking along the road when they were struck by a car backing out of a driveway. The pedestrian was trapped beneath the vehicle after impact. The driver stopped after hitting the pedestrian.
The pedestrian, who has yet to be identified, was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. There is no update on their condition at this time.
Officers intend to charge driver with improper backing.
This accident is a reminder that pedestrian collisions can happen at any time. While most people think pedestrians are mainly involved in accidents on busy streets and roadways, pedestrian accidents also take place in residential areas as well. The lesson here is that drivers must remain alert for their surroundings at all times. Failure to do so can result in an accident with serious consequences for both the driver and the injured victim.
