19-year-old Chelsey Murphy was killed in an accident when she was crossing the street and was hit by a distracted driver. The teen who struck the four-week pregnant mom-to-be had been talking on his phone at the time of the accident. He hadn’t seen Murphy crossing the street and thought he had hit debris at the time of the accident.
Chelsey Murphy was left in a coma and was eventually pronounced brain dead.
Ever since the accident, mother Kristin Murphy has been fighting to introduce a law that would make texting and driving a primary offense. In Florida, it is now a secondary offense, which means that there has to be another violation committed before a driver is cited for texting. Kristin wants to speak to legislators to tell her story and push for the primary offense in Florida so that families can receive the justice they deserve.
