Clay County, FL (August 27, 2018) - A crossing guard was hit by a car Monday morning. The accident occurred at Oakleaf High School in Clay County, Florida.
Florida Highway Patrol reports that the crossing guard, 72, was stepping out into traffic just after 7:00 am when she was struck by a car. The car was driven by a 16 year old teenager. Police say that the teenager will be charged for hitting the crossing guard.
The woman sustained injuries in the collision and was transported to St. Vincent's Hospital to be evaluated for back pain and a possible broken leg. A nearby school bus carrying 40 students was also sideswiped by the car but no one on the bus was injured.
Florida Highway Patrol reminds drivers to pay attention to their surroundings.
We are saddened to hear of this crash but also glad that the crossing guard was not more seriously hurt. Drivers in school zones must drive carefully and cautiously at all times. Failure to take proper care in these busy areas can lead to serious accidents involving both adults and children. The teenage driver at this case will be held responsible for the injuries sustained by the crossing guard.
