Clearwater, FL (August 13, 2018) – In Clearwater, a motorcycle collision took place that shut down part of the Memorial Causeway. The incident shut down the roadway for several hours yesterday in the morning.
Clearwater Police responded to the scene and said that a motorcyclist was headed west on the Memorial Causeway, when it suddenly collided with an SUV making a left turn onto Island Way. The incident took place around 9 a.m.
The 29-year-old man who was on the motorcycle was immediately flown to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg on trauma alert. Now, he is in critical condition and battling life-threatening injuries. Traffic was backed up on the Causeway for quite a few hours. The road reopened just after 1 p.m.
Investigators are still taking a closer look at the accident scene.
In Florida, our state sees the most motorcycle crash fatalities in the nation. In fact, in 2015 alone, 606 people lost their lives and over 9,000 were injured on Florida roads. Motorcyclists, however, only account for 20% of motor vehicle fatalities in the state. Let us offer our condolences and stand by your side if you have been involved in one of these serious accidents.
