Collier County, FL (November 4, 2019) - The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene of a fatal crash involving a car and a motorcycle in Collier County on Sunday, November 3rd. The crash happened along Tamiami Trail around 9:00 p.m.
According to reports, 37-year-old Michael J. Defilippis was driving a motorcycle northbound when he collided with a Volkswagen Jetta. The Jetta was traveling southbound when the driver attempted to make a U-turn and pulled directly into the path of Defilippis. The motorcycle crashed into the rear-end of the Jetta and was ejected from his bike. Rescue workers pronounced him dead at the scene. The driver of the Jetta was not hurt.
Charges are pending at this time as authorities continue to investigate.
We are saddened to hear of the tragic death of Michael J. Defilippis and our thoughts and condolences are with his family at this time.
Motorcycles account for approximately 15% of all traffic-related fatalities in Florida. This is a very large number considering that motorcycles represent only about 3% of all registered motor vehicles. Motorcycles are frequently not able to withstand the extreme force and impact of collisions with larger vehicles. Motorcyclists are often thrown from their bikes following a crash, which also increases the odds of death or serious injury.
