Columbia County, FL (November 28, 2018) - A waste disposal worker was hit and killed while on the job. The incident took place on Tuesday, November 27th, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
34-year-old Julian Udell was working for Waste Pro around 10:10 a when a Ford Taurus traveling southeast on County Road 250 struck him while he was standing directly behind a garbage truck. Udell was pinned between the truck and the car following the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Taurus, who has not been identified at this time, sustained serious injuries in the crash and was taken to the hospital. Florida Highway Patrol says that charges are pending in the crash but that a full investigation will take about 60 to 90 to complete.
Traffic accidents affect many people who work along our streets and highways, including waste disposal workers, firefighters, EMS workers, and police officers. These individuals are at greater risk of being hurt in traffic crashes simply because they are on the road more often than others. In 2017, 38 waste workers were killed while on the job. Undoubtedly, many more were injured while performing their duties.
We are saddened to hear of this tragic crash and our thoughts are with the family of Julian Udell.
