Florida is the nation's leader in a very undesirable statistic in that we have the highest bicycle fatality rate in the nation. Bicyclists in our state are more at risk of a crash than anywhere else across the country with .57 bicycle deaths reported per 100,000 residents. That is more than double the national average of .23 per 100,000 residents.
Bicycle safety is a very important topic for anyone who chooses to ride, especially in high traffic areas. Bicyclists should always wear protective equipment including a helmet, should always pay attention to the roadway and follow all traffic laws. Taking basic safety precautions will help reduce the risk of a bicycle collision.
