Deerfield Beach, FL (December 8, 2019) - One moped rider was killed and another suffered critical injuries in a crash that happened on Sunday, December 8th. The crash was reported on Northeast 48th Street around 1:40 a.m.
According to witness reports, a car was speeding through the area when a collision was heard. The Broward Sheriff's Office arrived on the scene a short time later and discovered that the accident involved a vehicle and a moped. A female on the moped was taken to Broward Health where she was pronounced dead. A male was transported with critical injuries. Neither of the two riders has been identified. The driver of the car has not been identified and it is unclear if they suffered any injuries.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing. There are no further details available.
Mopeds and motorcycles are used by many Floridians as a mode of transportation. Unfortunately, these smaller vehicles also carry a great risk of death or serious injury to riders involved in crashes. They are not designed to withstand the severe impact of a collision with a larger object and riders are often thrown from the bike, thus increasing the possibility of a poor outcome. In many cases, motorcycle and moped crashes are caused by the negligence of another driver.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to those affected by this tragic crash in Deerfield Beach.
