Dunedin, FL (June 22, 2020) - A 38-year-old man from Dunedin was killed in a motorcycle accident on Monday. The crash took place around 9:45 a.m. at 1750 Main Street.
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Department says that Josue Vega-Rodriguez was riding a 2014 Harley Davidson westbound on Main Street. At the same time, 79-year-old Larry Smith was traveling westbound in a vehicle. Smith tried to turn left into a parking lot but traveled directly into Vega-Rodriguez's path causing the two vehicles to collide. Vega-Rodriguez was taken to Northside Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Smith was not hurt in the crash.
An investigation is ongoing. At this time, neither speed nor impairment is suspected as contributing factors.
Motorcycle crashes in Florida are, unfortunately, quite common. Annually, there are more than 10,000 motorcycle accidents reported each year in our state. More than 8,000 riders are injured and about 500 are killed in Florida motorcycle accidents every year. Drivers often fail to see or observe motorcyclists which can lead to serious crashes that cause injury or death.
Our deepest sympathies are with the family of Josue Vega-Rodriguez following this fatal motorcycle crash in Dunedin.
