A dump truck driver lost his life on the northbound part of the turnpike this morning.
The Vero Beach accident took place on the Florida Turnpike in Indian River County. It left one person dead early Saturday morning. A dump truck driver was driving along and suddenly overcorrected his vehicle, which caused him to steer to the right. This caused the dump truck to fly off the roadway.
The truck left the roadway and went trailing through a guardrail. It then traveled down a grassy embankment and came to rest on its left side.
All northbound lanes had to be cleared and they were closed for almost an hour. The Florida Highway Patrol was called to the scene to investigate the accident. The right lane was closed the longest, for six hours, while congestion built up into St. Lucie County.
The driver was identified as a male but his name was not released because the next of kin must still be notified.
As of 2008, about 11% of all motor vehicle accidents involving a fatality involved large trucks. This included trucks that were over 10,000 pounds. Many truck accidents happen every year throughout Florida for a variety of reasons.
