An elderly woman was struck and killed in an accident by a vehicle, that then fled the scene immediately. The City of Miami Police were called to the scene of the hit-and-run that took her life at an intersection. The victim was identified as 76-year-old Hilda Garcia.
Garcia was crossing the street with her walker when a vehicle came upon her from the northbound direction and struck her, then driving away from the scene. Police said the car dragged her 90 to 100 feet, which identifies in the direction that the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed. At the scene, police found her mangled walker as one of the only things left behind for evidence.
Her family members said she was just short of her 77th birthday, which was only a week away. Crime scene investigators closed the roadway off overnight so that they could complete their investigation.
Police are still searching for the driver, who might have been in a dark vehicle that now has extensive front-end damage.
