Fort Myers, FL (July 7, 2018) – The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating an accident that left one person dead on Thursday night. It has been deemed a bicycle accident that happened on the San Carlos Boulevard.
The accident was called in around 11:15 p.m. that night near the B&B Automotive and a local bowling alley. It was determined that 23-year-old Timothy Greg Spinelli of Fort Myers was traveling north on the roadway when he suddenly lost control of his vehicle while navigating a difficult curve in the road.
At the same time, there was a bicyclist on the sidewalk, whose name has not yet been released. Spinelli drove onto the sidewalk and his vehicle started to overturn. He collided with the bicyclist.
The bicyclist was thrown into the air. He died at the scene, according to the investigation. Spinelli, on the other hand, only suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Lee Memorial Hospital. Apparently, he had been drinking and driving that night.
Every month in Florida, there are 540 accidents involving a motor vehicle and a bicycle. These accidents can be especially devastating for bicyclists, who are offered few protections in these accidents compared to the drivers of the vehicles. Our condolences are with you if you have lost a loved one or were seriously injured in a bicycle-related crash.
