Gadsden County, FL (October 28, 2018) - A man is in critical condition after he was hit by a car on Saturday, October 27th.
The Florida Highway Patrol was called to the crash scene just outside the Flying J Truck Stop in Midway around 7:50 pm. The injured pedestrian was identified as Alfred Johnson. FHP Troopers say that Johnson was walking along the road when he was struck by a Ford Focus which was traveling in the outside lanes of Highway 90. Johnson was critically hurt in the crash and was rushed to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
No charges have been filed at this time as police continue to investigate.
In 2017, Florida ranked as the second highest state for pedestrian-related fatalities. There were 299 reported fatal pedestrian crashes between January and June. Countless others were hurt in these incidents.
These sobering statistics remind us that pedestrians face legitimate safety risks each time they walk in an area where traffic is present. Pedestrians are more likely to be injured at night when they are walking along poorly lit roadways. A pedestrian should always keep in mind a few basic safety rules such as walking in well-lit areas wherever possible, wearing light clothing or reflective gear, and cross the road at crosswalks and marked pedestrian areas if such areas are available. Following these tips can help cut down on pedestrian-related injuries.
