A 51-year-old man named Gerald Don Cameron from Key West was killed in a crash yesterday morning when he offered a helping hand to a man with a broken down SUV. Cameron was helping the driver of the Ford Explorer move his SUV onto a forklift to get it to safety. Out of nowhere, a Nissan Rogue headed northbound struck him. He was instantly crushed between the two vehicles.
The Rogue was driven by a 29-year-old Lieter Morales Gallardo of Key West. Police say that he never showed that he was going to slow down or brake before he hit Cameron. Gallardo had three toddlers inside the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Cameron was doing his best to use the forklift as the SUV driver steered his Explorer so they could take it to safety. As Cameron was bending over, he was instantly struck by the Rogue. He was pronounced dead at the Lower Keys Hospital and charges are currently pending.
