Hillsborough County, FL (July 22, 2019) - A 21-year-old man died while standing outside of his disabled vehicle on I-75. The crash happened around 2:40 p.m. on I-75 North in Hillsborough County.
According to reports, a tow truck was parked on the shoulder of the roadway. The truck had a Jeep Liberty lifted onto its bed. The driver of the tow truck was standing to the side, while 21-year-old Daniel Vincent Schaffer was standing behind the truck. That is when a Dodge Ram traveling northbound on I-75 came behind the tow truck and collided with Schaffer. The pickup truck, tow truck, and Jeep all burst into flames following the crash. Schaffer was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries. The driver of the tow truck was seriously hurt and was taken to Tampa General Hospital.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating and there are charges pending at this time.
We wish to extend our most sincere sympathies to the family of Daniel Schaffer.
Fatal car accidents take place on Florida's roadways about every three hours. Sometimes, a driver is most vulnerable when they are standing outside of their vehicles. Distracted, impaired, and reckless drivers who fail to maintain their lane are responsible for numerous serious and fatal crashes each year. Those standing along the roadway are vulnerable to a serious collision at any time.
