Hit-and-run collisions account for about a quarter of all traffic crashes reported in Florida, which amounts to about 100,000 hit-and-run accidents each year. In many of these crashes, the driver flees the scene after the victim has sustained serious injuries. Leaving the scene of an injury accident is a felony offense and carries serious criminal penalties including jail time.
When a pedestrian is injured in a hit-and-run accident, the pedestrian will be entitled to bring a claim against the negligent driver. Under Florida personal injury law, several types of damages are recoverable, including loss of income, medical expenses, pain and suffering, and potentially more.
