Hudson, FL (October 26, 2018) - A man from Spring Hill was killed in motorcycle crash on Thursday, October 25th.
31 year old Paul Thomas Mello was traveling in the southbound lanes of US 19 around midnight. At the same time, 29 year old Donald Patenaude was traveling northbound in a Ford SUV. As Mello and Patenaude approached the intersection with Tower Drive, Mello tried to make a U-Turn. Patenuade's vehicle struck the motorcycle, causing it to become wedged underneath the SUV.
Both the motorcycle and the SUV then caught fire. Mello was rushed to Regional Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries. Patenaude was not hurt. There is no further information available at this time.
Over 5,000 people were killed in motorcycle accidents in 2015. This is a large number considering that only 3% of registered vehicles are motorcycles. The rate of severe and deadly accidents among motorcycles is much higher than accidents involving passenger and other types of vehicles.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to tehe family of Paul Thomas Mello.
