Islamorada, FL (June 22, 2019) - A 39-year-old pregnant woman was hospitalized after her SUV was struck by another SUV in a head-on crash in the Florida Keys. The crash took place on Thursday, June 20th, around 8:45 p.m.
Police responded to the crash on US-1, near mile marker 67. Following an investigation, it was determined that 46-year-old Robert Schamel, of Marathon, was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Express van in the southbound lanes of the highway. Schamel apparently fell asleep, causing his car to drift into the northbound lanes. While in the northbound lanes, his vehicle collided head-on with a 2015 Nissan Armada. The Armada was driven by 39-year-old Molly McClung. McClung, who is eight and half months pregnant, was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. She is in stable condition and her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Schamel was not injured.
Around 400,000 accidents take place in Florida each year. Over half of these crashes result in injuries to one or more victims. Fatigued drivers, such as we see here, are responsible for many crashes annually. A fatigued driver is just as dangerous as a distracted or impaired driver, and the results of such crashes can be equally as catastrophic. Fortunately, it appears as though Molly McClung will make a complete recovery in this accident.
