Jackson County, FL (August 12, 2018) – A 24-year-old woman lost her life following a severe five-vehicle crash that happened yesterday. The accident took place in Jackson County around 5:00 in the morning on I-10.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that a Nissan Altima was entering Interstate 10 when the driver suddenly lost control and struck a guardrail in the median, immobilizing the vehicle. The driver and passenger both exited the vehicle and started walking toward the shoulder of the road.
A Chevy Impala, Kia Optima, and Toyota Corolla all saw the vehicle in the westbound lanes and were able to stop in time to help. A tractor-trailer traveling westbound struck the Nissan Altima, which caused it to hit the other three vehicles. It then jackknifed and crossed the bridge rail before it fell and landed on the train tracks below.
The driver of the Chevy Impala was out helping the others at the time of the collision and was struck by her own vehicle. She has been identified as 24-year-old Aeriel Peifer, and she died at the scene of the accident.
The driver of the Optima was critically injured and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver and passenger of the Nissan Altima both received minor injuries and were transported to the hospital.
Charges are currently pending, and an investigation is ongoing.
