Jacksonville, FL (February 26, 2019) - Authorities in Jacksonville are investigating after a crash between a Jeep Compass and a motorcycle took place on US-17 just after midnight on Tuesday, February 26th.
Officials with the Florida Highway Patrol arrived at the crash scene near Collins Road around 12:05 a.m. Following an investigation, officials were able to determine that 31-year-old Daniel Crawford was operating a Jeep Compass, while intoxicated, in the northbound lanes of the highway when he attempted to make a left turn. Crawford turned into the path of an oncoming motorcyclist in the northbound lanes of US-17.
The motorcyclist was rushed to Orange Park Medical Center with serious injuries. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Crawford was charged with DUI property damage and DUI causing serious bodily injury following the accident.
In 2016, Florida experienced over 5,000 DUI-related crashes; about 3,000 of these crashes also resulted in injuries to one or more of the crash victims. Driving under the influence is incredibly irresponsible and can lead to catastrophic consequences for innocent victims. Sadly, it appears as though drugs or alcohol played a major factor in this crash which led to injuries for the motorcyclist. We are hopeful for their speedy recovery.
