Jacksonville, FL (December 10, 2018) - A Jacksonville Sheriff's Office bailiff was killed in a crash involving a drunk driver over the weekend. The crash took place around 1:15 am on Sunday, December 9th.
The Florida Highway Patrol says that 46-year-old Kim Johnston was driving an Acura in the northbound lanes of I-95 when she collided with a Chevrolet Tahoe. The Tahoe was carrying a family of four including Cathy Adams. The impact of the collision caused the SUV to lose control and overturn after veering across several travel lanes. Cathy Adams suffered critical injuries in the crash and was rushed to the hospital. Adams was put on life support at a local hospital and later succumbed to her injuries. Adams was an employee of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Adams' husband, William Jack Adams, was trapped in the vehicle and suffered critical injuries. Their two children sustained minor injuries. The Adams family was traveling home from a high school football game in Orlando when the crash occurred.
Following an investigation, police arrested Johnston on charges of driving under the influence with serious bodily injury to another. Additional charges remain pending at this time.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Cathy Adams in this horrific crash. Losing a loved one to a fatal crash is one of the most heartbreaking things that a family can ever endure.
Impaired driving is a form of negligent and reckless behavior that causes catastrophic damage to many innocent victims and their families. In 2016, Florida saw over 5,000 car accidents related to driving under the influence. Over 400 of those crashes involved fatal injury. Unfortunately, this is yet another example of the problems caused by alcohol and drug-related impaired driving.
