27-year-old Jose Alvarez Rodriguez was arrested on Wednesday for a crash that happened a year ago, as police discovered that he had alcohol and cocaine in his system at the time of the incident. The accident on Interstate 95 killed his passenger and injured a police trooper.
This morning, Judge Dina Keever-Agrama set his bail at $35,000 during a hearing. The accident happened when he lost control of his 2017 Chevy Camaro and it flipped sideways, striking a vehicle parked in the median. The Ranger then crashed into a police car. The other driver, 54-year-old Joseph Polynice, was not hurt in the accident.
Cedric Mitchell, the state trooper who sustained minor injuries due to the crash, cut the seat belt off of Jose Alvarez Rodriguez and laid him on the ground until help arrived. He coughed up blood and the trooper noticed that his breath smelled like alcohol.
Rodriguez’s passenger, 22-year-old Gretel Mendez-Vega, was the front seat passenger that died at the scene after the fatal accident. Many damages were also caused by the accident.
