Key Largo, FL (November 8, 2018) - A Sheriff's deputy in Monroe County suffered injuries in a two-car crash while on duty on Tuesday, November 8th.
Deputy Andrew Laird was driving a Ford Taurus in the northbound lanes of US 1 near mile marker 98. Suddenly, a 2019 Dodge Caravan traveling in the same direction attempted to make a lane change. The driver of the minivan, 60-year-old Joseph Kuchler, did not see Laird's vehicle and collided with the right front side while making the lane change.
Laird suffered injuries and was transported to Mariners Hospital. The injuries are not life-threatening. Kuchler was charged with improper lane change for causing the crash.
We are glad to hear that the deputy will have a full recovery from the injuries suffered in this crash on US 1.
Car accidents happen approximately every 92 seconds in Florida. Even routine driving behaviors such as changing lanes can lead to severe accidents if they are not executed safely and properly. All drivers must remember to keep a proper lookout at all times while on the roadway to ensure that they are not increasing the risk of an accident occurring.
