Lake City, FL (September 4, 2018) - A man died in a two vehicle crash Sunday night in Columbia County. According to Florida Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 11:00 pm, near the intersection of State Road 47 and SW Cates Street.
A Chevy Tahoe was traveling in the southbound lanes of SR 47, behind a Honda Accord. The Accord slowed to make a turn onto Cates Street when the Tahoe driver tried to pass in the northbound lane. The Tahoe struck the Accord as it attempted to make the pass.
The Accord driver, 63 year old Frederick Lacey, died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. A 61 year old passenger in the Accord had minor injuries and was treated at Lake City Medical Center.
The Tahoe driver, a 17 year old boy, also sustained injuries that are considered to be minor. FHP says that it could issue charges. At this time, the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
Each year in Florida, there are approximately 250,000 injury accidents reported. Of these accidents, many of them will involve serious or fatal injuries. Our thoughts go out to Frederick Lacey's family following this deadly collision.
In this case, it appears as though police intend to charge the Tahoe driver for his role in the crash. Reckless driving and unsafe traffic maneuvers contribute to a high percentage of vehicle fatalities. When this type of accident happens on our roadways, the deceased's family will consider bringing a wrongful death claim against the responsible driver. Such a claim is based on the driver's negligence that led up to the death of an innocent motorist.
