Lake Hamilton, FL (October 19, 2018) - A bicyclist in Lake Hamilton died after being struck by a vehicle on US 27. The accident happened on Thursday, October 18th.
The cyclist was traveling in the northbound lanes of the highway and had just left a Hardee's restaurant when the crash occurred. Police say that a semi-truck driver was behind the cyclist and swerved to avoid hitting him after he veered into the center lane. As the truck swerved, a Dodge Caravan driven by Kellie P. Kelley struck the cyclist with the right side of her vehicle. A third vehicle narrowly missed the cyclist but ran over the bicycle instead.
All three vehicles stopped in the left turn lane after the crash. The cyclist was located in the middle lane and was pronounced dead at the scene. The cyclist was not carrying identification and could not be positively identified at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
Riding a bicycle can be a very hazardous activity. Bicyclists are very vulnerable to suffering death or serious injury in the event that they are involved in a vehicle crash. When a bicyclist is hurt in a crash with a vehicle, police must closely examine the scene to determine the exact sequence of the accident. Once the investigation is complete, a determination will be made as to negligence and, ultimately, responsibility, for the crash.
