Lakeland, FL (February 12, 2020) - A 42-year-old worker was killed on Monday, February 10th when he was struck by a vehicle in the 4000 block of Lakeland Highlands Road.
The Lakeland Police Department reports that Abraham Ira Remchuk was standing in the roadway near the middle lanes, performing surveying work when he was hit. Police say that a 2006 Ford F-150 traveling northbound struck Remchuk. The driver of the Ford, 19-year-old Bryce Warneke, told police that she looked down to check her speed right before the crash occurred. Remchuk was thrown from the place where he was standing and collided with another vehicle before landing in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Warneke stopped and cooperated with investigators. No word was given on whether Warneke faces any charges in connection with the crash.
Our condolences are with the family of the deceased victim at this time.
Sadly, Florida experiences multiple fatal crashes per day. A deadly collision is reported on our roadways approximately every 3 hours and more than 3,000 victims, on average, lose their lives in crashes every year. Those who work on or near the roadways are at much greater risk and drivers should always be aware when they are traveling through work zones or road construction areas. Even a single moment of inattention can cause a catastrophic event to occur.
