Leesburg, FL (August 20, 2018) - A Leesburg woman hit a pedestrian on her way to work Saturday and then fled the scene. According to Floriday Highway Patrol, Santrel Morelli struck a pedestrian walking south on Radio Road, near Pleasant View Drive. Morelli, 20, got out of her vehicle after striking the pedestrian. She then walked around the vehicle before getting back in and leaving the scene. The injured pedestrian was found lying in the roadway.
Authorities have identified the pedestrian as 23 year old Hunter Lee Stanley. Stanley suffered undisclosed injuries and was transported to Leesburg Regional Medical Center for further treatment. Police were able to identify the vehicle through witnesses. They later found the registered owner who led them to Morelli. Morelli was charged in the crash and booked into jail on a $5,000.00 bond.
Last year in Florida, there were approximately 10,000 pedestrians injured in car accidents. Many times, a pedestrian is struck while walking in a crosswalk or other clearly marked areas. Other times, the pedestrian may be walking in an unmarked area or may be less visible to the driver.
In any pedestrian accident, authorities must first determine whose negligence caused the crash to occur. In cases where the pedestrian did not cause the initial accident, there is a claim for personal injury arising from the accident. Pedestrian accidents unfortunately will often result in catastrohic injuries or even death.
