Lithia, FL (March 2, 2019) - A head-on crash on County Road 39 left a woman dead and a man with life-threatening injuries on Thursday, February 28th, around 4:30 pm.
20-year-old Alexis Demere was driving a 2012 Toyota Yaris southbound on CR-39 when her car crossed over the center line and struck a 2007 Chevrolet Colorado head-on. The Toyota spun counterclockwise before ending up in a ditch. Demere was thrown from her car and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Colorado was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. A passenger in the Colorado was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital with minor injuries.
Police believe that alcohol and drugs played a role in the collision. Toxicology results are still pending.
Fatal crashes take place in our state about eight times per day. A fatal crash happens for a variety of reasons, including impairment. Impaired drivers have both their physical and mental abilities slowed because of alcohol and are unable to appreciate the dangers that are present in everyday driving.
This crash is a sad reminder of the damage and destruction that can be caused when a suspected impaired driver makes the decision to get behind the wheel, risking their lives and the lives of others. Our thoughts go out to the friends and family of Alexis Demere at this time, and we hope they are able to find strength during this difficult period.
