The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the crash scene around 6:30 pm. When they arrived, they located Gypsy Star McEntire. McEntire was riding a scooter on SR 40 when she was struck by a 2005 to 2010 model Chrysler 300. The Chrysler fled the scene following the crash. McEntire was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Officers say that the Chrysler should have heavy front-end damage, including a missing chrome grill. Anyone with information is asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol at 1-800-387-1290.
A fatal accident is reported in Florida about every three hours. While fatal accidents involving scooters and motorcycles occur less often, they still take place on our roadways with some frequency. Scooters, mopeds, motorcycles and other motorized vehicles offer less protection in the event of a crash and therefore the injuries sustained are more likely to be serious. Our thoughts are with the family of Gypsy McEntire in this tragic Marion County crash.
