Martin County, FL (January 28, 2020) - An off-duty Martin County deputy was identified as the victim of a serious crash that took place along County Road 714. The crash happened on Saturday, January 25th around 1:20 a.m.
Deputy Shawn Green spotted a rollover crash as he was driving on CR 714. Green stopped to provide assistance to the victim. He was outside of his vehicle when he was struck by another vehicle that was passing by the area. A deputy who had responded to the initial crash located Green when he arrived at the scene. Green was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital in serious condition. He suffered injuries to his face along with several broken bones and underwent surgery on Sunday. The victim in the initial crash was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. There is no information on the vehicle or the driver that struck Green at this time.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
Florida experiences approximately 250,000 injury crashes on our roadways every year. Unfortunately, "secondary accidents," or those that occur as an initial crash investigation is in progress, do occur quite often. Drivers who fail to pay attention to the roadway or lose control of their vehicles and veer off the roadway place those on the shoulder of the road at great risk. These types of crashes often occur at high speeds, further endangering the victims.
Our thoughts and condolences are with those hurt in this crash in Martin County.
