Miami Beach, FL (August 4, 2018) – A worker died nearly a week after a serious demolition accident took place in Miami Beach. 46-year-old Samuel Landis lost his life last afternoon from complications related to the serious accident.
The accident report stated that a 13-story building collapsed last week in an unsafe manner, which caused thick smoke to cover the entire area of Collins Avenue. Police were forced to shut down several blocks of the nearby streets. The Marlborough House had a demolition permit instead of an implosion permit, which prevented it from being brought down in one quick manner.
A piece of debris struck Landis just below the chest and tossed him several feet across Collins Avenue. A witness said that he was thrown about 5 feet.
An officer resuscitated Landis after he was struck by the large piece of a boulder. He was transported by Miami Beach Fire Rescue to the Jackson Memorial Hospital trauma unit. He listed in critical condition before he passed away. Others were also taken to the hospital due to the heavy smoke inhalation.
At this time, the incident is still being investigated.
