North Fort Myers, FL (January 15, 2019) - A 12-year-old girl was tragically killed while walking her 9-year-old sister to a bus stop in North Fort Myers on Monday, January 14th.
Alana Tamplin was walking with her sister, Brooklyn, along Durrance Road to the bus stop about a quarter of a mile from their home. As Alana's sister boarded the bus, she turned around to walk home with another 12-year-old girl. As Alana walked along the side of the roadway, she was struck by a 2006 Toyota driven by 62-year-old Mary Ann Miller. The crash happened around 7:00 am. Miller left the scene but later returned.
Alana died shortly thereafter at Lee Memorial Hospital. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. There is no word on what charges, if any, that Miller will face.
We wish to extend our most sincere condolences to the family of Alana Tamplin. This is a heartbreaking crash and it is a true tragedy to lose a 12-year-old child to any kind of traffic accident.
This school year has seen several serious and fatal crashes involving children waiting for a school bus or walking to a bus stop. Drivers must always remember to remain vigilant at all times in the early morning and afternoon hours when children are coming to and from school. Extra care and caution must be used when drivers are traveling through areas where children could be present. Although it remains too early to determine if the driver was negligent in this case, the police will conduct a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
