According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, Derek Myers was riding a 2016 Zero westbound on SR 50 when he traveled through a green light on Avalon Boulevard. At the same time, 20-year-old Mary Evans was driving a 1998 Ford SUV in the opposite direction. Myers attempted to make a left turn against a red light, causing her vehicle to collide with the motorcycle. Myers was killed as a result of the crash. There were no other injuries reported.
Police are still investigating and there are charges pending against Myers at this time.
Our condolences go out to the family of Derek Myers.
A Florida motorcycle accident is an often devastating and catastrophic event. With approximately 10,000 motorcycle crashes each year and 8,000 reported injuries, it is clear that motorcyclists are at great risk when they are involved in a crash with a vehicle. Failing to yield the right of way is a common cause in motorcycle collisions as many drivers fail to see motorcycles on the roadway until it is too late.
