Orange County, FL (August 29, 2018) - Two construction workers are dead following the collapse of scaffolding at a construction site near Disney on Wednesday. At the time of the collapse, the workers were constructing a hotel building near the Walt Disney Resort. The affected workers were standing on a scaffold between the sixth and seventh floors of the hotel when the scaffold suddenly collapsed underneath them.
Two individuals were killed in the collapse while a third suffered minor injuries and was able to pull himself up to safety. The scaffolding collapse occurred as the workers were about to start pouring concrete at the site. The names of those killed have not been released at this time. Orange County Fire and Rescue officials responded to the scene.
Officials on site have not provided an explanation for why the collapse happened. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration will undertake a full review to determine the cause.
We are saddened to hear of the deaths of the two construction workers.
In 2016, there were 309 fatal job site accidents reported in Florida. Construction workers are especially at risk of serious injuries and death while working at job sites due to the use of heavy equipment and working on high rise buildings. When at tragedy such as this occurs, a full investigation into the facts is warranted.
Construction sites are regulated with safety guidelines and procedures passed by federal, state and local governments. In some cases, those in charge of a construction project fail to meet these safety standards and injuries or death result due to the failure. In cases such as these, anyone injured at the site, whether a worker or a passerby, will have a claim for compensation arising from the accident. We will have to await a full investigation into this accident in order to determine who could be responsible.
