Orange County, FL (January 24, 2019) - A woman walking near the University of Central Florida was hurt after she was struck by a vehicle in a crosswalk. The incident took place around 6:15 pm on Wednesday, January 23rd.
29-year-old Lindsey Rebekah Walker was walking along Alafaya Trail at the intersection with Corporate Boulevard when she attempted to cross the road. As she was crossing, Walker was struck by a Honda Civic traveling on Corporate Boulevard. The Civic had a green light in its direction of travel when it entered the intersection and hit Walker. Walker was hurt in the crash but her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. She was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center to be treated.
This is the second pedestrian-related crash in the area in the past week. Officials at UCF are investigating ways to make the area safer for pedestrians.
About 10,000 pedestrians will be hurt in collisions involving vehicles this year. College campuses such as UCF are a target for pedestrian accidents to occur given the sheer volume of pedestrians combined with traffic in a busy area. Drivers should always remain alert for pedestrians when approaching intersections and crosswalks. Driving carefully and cautiously could be the difference in preventing a serious crash from occurring. Pedestrians should likewise remain vigilant and only attempt to cross or enter the roadway when it is safe to do so.
