According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the boy was riding his bicycle across Balboa Drive when he was struck by a car attempting to make a right turn. The car was traveling on Powers Drive and turning right onto Balboa. The driver of the car, identified as 68-year-old Mae Edwards, told police that her light was green when she was turning. The boy suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. There is no further word on his condition at this time.
Police have not released additional information about the crash. The incident remains under investigation and no charges had been issued as of Wednesday morning.
It is common to see bicyclists out and about on our roadways. People of all ages, from young children to older adults, enjoy riding bicycles for fun, exercise, or for basic transportation needs. Drivers must always ensure that they are operating their vehicles safely in areas where they could encounter bicycles. This crash occurred in a crosswalk where it would be extremely common to see a bicycle or pedestrian. Although police have not yet issued charges, it is likely that the driver could be held responsible for striking the child in the crosswalk.
