Orlando, FL (November 7, 2018) - A motorcyclist from Orlando is dead following a crash on I-75 that occurred on Monday, November 5th.
The Florida Highway Patrol reports that 28-year-old Charlie Garcia was riding his motorcycle northbound on I-75 when he stopped and pulled the bike into a painted area on an exit ramp near Gibsonton Drive. A vehicle driven by 21-year-old Lizangela Bonilla-Parilla attempted to merge onto the exit ramp but struck Garcia from behind. Garcia, who was wearing a helmet, suffered critical injuries and died at the scene of the crash. There is no word on whether Bonilla-Parilla was hurt in the accident.
Police have not said whether any charges will be filed against Bonilla-Parilla at this time.
Our condolences go to the family of Charlie Garcia for their loss in this tragic crash. Motorcycle accidents happen quite frequently and tend to be severe. Although only 3% of all registered motor vehicles are motorcycles, an astounding 14% of all traffic-related fatalities involve motorcycles. While a motorcycle can bring fun and enjoyment for many, the dangers of riding cannot be underscored enough.
Drivers on the roadway have an obligation to maintain a lookout for other vehicles, including motorcycles at all times. Failure to maintain a proper lookout that results in a collision is a form of negligence that leads to liability.
