Pasco County, FL (September 6, 2018) - A bicyclist is dead following a hit-and-run crash in Pasco County on Wednesday night. The Florida Highway Patrol reports that 48 year old Hans Mentor was riding in the northbound lanes of Boyette Road just before 11:00 pm. A vehicle was traveling behind Mentor's bicycle. The vehicle tried to pass Mentor but crashed in the rear of his bike. Mentor died from the impact at the scene of the crash.
Following the collision, the vehicle driver did not wait for law enforcement to arrive and fled the accident site. FHP is actively looking for the driver and is asking anyone with information to call 813-558-1800 or *FHP.
Florida bicycle accidents often result in severe injuries or even death to those involved. Bicyclists obviously do not have the same protection from serious injury as a traditional vehicle in the event of a crash. Bicyclists, however, do have a right to use the roadway the same as a vehicle and many of the same rules and regulations apply to bicycles that apply to other vehicles.
A driver who causes a collision with a bicyclist can be held responsible if the driver was negligent. Negligence happens when a driver fails to exercise reasonable care for the safety of others on the road. In this crash, a full investigation will be conducted to determine if the driver was negligent in the death of Hans Mentor. In the meantime, our condolences are with Mr. Mentor's loved ones at this difficult moment.
