Pasco County, FL (March 2, 2019) - A 64-year-old man from Hudson was killed in a motorcycle crash along Hudson Avenue on Friday, March 1st.
Stephen Franklin Nix was riding a 1995 Harley-Davidson FLHR motorcycle eastbound on Hudson Avenue around 3:15 p.m. At the same time, 77-year-old Karla Lynn Switzer was driving a 2013 Chrysler northbound on Clayton Boulevard. Switzer stopped her vehicle and attempted to make a U-turn. As she was turning, her vehicle pulled directly into the path of Nix's motorcycle. The motorcycle and Chrysler collided, causing him to suffer critical injuries. He was rushed to Bayonet Point Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Florida Highway Patrol investigated the crash. Charges are pending against Switzer at this time.
Motorcycles account for approximately 3% of all registered vehicles on our roadway. In contrast, 14% of all traffic-related deaths occur on motorcycles. It seems clear, therefore, that motorcycle transportation carries a great risk of death or serious bodily injury.
Motorcyclists can take several safety precautions, including wearing a helmet, following all traffic laws, and operating a motorcycle at the proper speed limit. Despite the safety precautions that can be taken, accidents are bound to happen. Our thoughts are with the family of Stephen Franklin Nix during this difficult time.
