Pinellas Park, FL (March 15, 2019) - A Pinellas County Sheriff's Deputy was injured in a fatal collision that took place on 66th Street N. The crash happened just after 3:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 14th.
According to reports, Deputy Jonathan Ferguson had just finished his shift and was traveling northbound on 66th Street in the middle lane. Ferguson was in a marked police vehicle. At the same time, 74-year-old Richard Peterson was traveling northbound on 66th in a 2018 Chevy Equinox. Both Ferguson and Peterson were stopped at a red light. That was when 28-year-old Brittney Hunter approached both vehicles the wrong way, from a southbound direction.
Hunter's 2002 Buick LeSabre collided head-on with Peterson's vehicle, causing a chain reaction crash with Ferguson's police vehicle. Hunter died from injuries sustained in the crash, while Ferguson and Peterson were both hospitalized. There is no word at this time on the extent or severity of their injuries.
Police say that alcohol appeared to play a role in the crash and the investigation remains ongoing.
Nearly 3,000 fatal crashes occurred on Florida roadways in 2016. When a fatal crash happens, a complete investigation is undertaken by officers at the scene.
