Port Richey, FL (July 5, 2018) – A Port Richey motorcyclist was killed this past week in a serious accident. The young man was identified as 20-year-old Joshua Ortiz, who died at an area hospital on Tuesday evening when his motorcycle collided with a van at a crossroad.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, they found that Ortiz had been speeding south along Little Road around 8:30 p.m. At the same time, a 1998 Dodge Ram was driving east on Youth Lane. It crossed into the southbound lanes and went straight into Ortiz’s path.
Yesterday, many of Ortiz’s friends and family gathered around the crash site so that they could have a memorial for their friend. Friends claim that Ortiz only started riding his motorcycle in recent weeks. Many of them told him that he should always ride safely and make sure that he looked twice when it came to other vehicles on the roadway.
Many others claimed that there were motorcycle accidents in that area all the time, many of which would lead to fatalities.
Charges are currently pending for the 75-year-old who crossed over into his lane with the van. At this time, the investigation continues.
Motorcycle riders are some of the most likely motor vehicle users to die in a serious crash. Florida actually has the most motorcycle fatalities out of any other state in the nation. Motorcyclists account for 20% of motor vehicle fatalities in Florida, which puts them at an all-time high.
