Punta Gorda, FL (August 30, 2021) - A woman from Punta Gorda was killed in a crash that took place on Monday, August 30th. The accident happened around 2:00 a.m. on U.S. Highway 41 near Olena Boulevard.
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol responded to the crash scene. According to reports, a 23-year-old Devon Barber was traveling southbound in a Ford Sedan at a high rate of speed. At the same time, the 37-year-old Punta Gorda woman was also traveling southbound in a Kia on U.S. 41 directly in front of Barber's vehicle. Barber rear-ended the Kia, causing it to veer off the roadway and onto a grassy shoulder. The female Kia driver died at the scene.
After an investigation, police arrested Barber and charged him with three counts of property damage, one count of vehicular homicide, and one count of DUI manslaughter. Police believe that Barber was traveling nearly 100 miles per hour when the accident occurred.
