Reddick, FL (September 22, 2018) - A bicyclist died after being hit by a truck on Friday, September 21st. David A. Waller, 25, was riding his bicycle on Northwest Gainesville Road in the northbound lanes are around 8:45 pm. Waller was struck from behind by a pickup truck driven by 70-year-old John Vance.
Vance told reporters on the scene that the bicycle was initially on the left side of the roadway but then veered to the right when the crash occurred. Vance also told reporters that he tried to swerve to avoid an accident. Laura Slaback, who lives near the crash site, called the road "very dangerous" and says that she sees cars speed "up and down" the road on a regular basis.
Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash. There is no additional information available.
Our thoughts are with the family of David Waller following this tragic crash in Ocala. Bicycle accidents often happen at night or in poorly lit areas. In these places, it can be difficult for drivers to see bicyclists and pedestrians who may be wearing dark clothing or have no reflective gear. It is important for bicyclists to take basic safety precautions including riding in well-lit areas and wearing clothing that makes it easier for drivers to see them.
