Shawn Smith, Bicyclist, Struck by Pickup Truck and Died at Hospital

43-year-old Shawn Smith, a competitive mountain bike racer, was killed in Northwest Alachua County in an unfortunate accident.

The accident took place around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening when Smith was cycling and was suddenly struck by a pickup truck. He was taken to Shands and died on Thursday afternoon due to serious injuries. The family started a GoFundMe to receive help with outstanding medical bills. Right now, state troopers are investigating the accident to determine if the driver should be charged.

    A bicyclist died after falling off of his bicycle and into oncoming traffic in Daytona Beach. The crash took place on Saturday, July 27th, around 3:00 p.m. Police responded to International Speedway Boulevard in response to the crash. Once on-scene, police identified the bicyclist as 37-year-old Coy Thomas Malone. Investigators determined that Malone was riding his bicycle when the chain became loose.     A pedestrian was killed in a crash on US Highway 27 in Highlands County. The crash took place in the early morning hours of Monday, August 26th. According to troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol, the pedestrian was walking along the northbound lanes of Highway 27 when they were struck by a vehicle. Troopers and rescue workers responded and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The pedestrian has not been identified at this time pending next-of-kin notification.
