St. Augustine, FL (September 8, 2018) - Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal two car crash that took place on SR-A1A Friday. The incident occurred at approximately 4:36 pm. According to reports Andrew Jason Bailey, 31, was driving a 2003 Nissan Maxima northbound on SR-A1A. At the same time, a BMW driven by 27 year old Nicholas John Jones attempted to pass Bailey's vehicle.
Bailey evasively swerved to the left to avoid colliding with the BMW but was unable to prevent a collision. Bailey's passenger side struck the left rear of Jones's vehicle. Bailey then lost control of his car, which traveled across the southbound lanes and overturned before colliding with a neighborhood entrance sign.
Bailey was transported by EMS to Flagler Hospital where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Jones was not injured in the accident and alcohol is not believed to be a factor. Both drivers were wearing seat belts when the collision occurred.
We are saddened to hear of this fatal and tragic accident. At this time, our thoughts are with the family and friends of Andrew Jason Bailey.
In Florida, a fatal crash takes place approximately every 3 hours. Fatal crashes usually involve some form of driver error, whether it be impairment, drowsiness, distraction, or reckless driving. When more than one car is involved in a fatal crash, police will seek to determine which driver is responsible for the collision.
The family of Andrew Jason Bailey will potentially look to the other driver to recover damages caused by Bailey's death. From preliminary reports, it seems as though this accident was entirely preventable and that Nicholas Jones was negligent in causing the crash to occur.
